One of the common practical questions patients ask before varicose vein treatment is, “What should I wear on the day?” It sounds like a small detail, but wearing the right clothes can make the day much easier and more comfortable.
Most modern varicose vein treatments, including radiofrequency ablation, foam sclerotherapy and phlebectomies, are carried out under local anaesthetic as walk-in, walk-out procedures. You are awake throughout and can usually walk straight afterwards. Because of this, the clothes you wear should be comfortable, loose and easy to change in and out of.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing
The most important advice is to wear loose-fitting clothes.
After treatment, your leg may have small dressings, padding, bandaging or a compression stocking applied. Tight trousers, skinny jeans or leggings can be difficult to get back on afterwards and may feel uncomfortable over the treated area.
Good choices include loose trousers, jogging bottoms, shorts, a skirt or a dress. Choose something simple that gives easy access to the leg being treated and that will still be comfortable over a stocking or dressing.
Avoid tight jeans, leggings and high heels
It is best to avoid tight jeans, tight leggings, high heels or anything that is difficult to remove. This is especially important if you are having radiofrequency ablation, phlebectomies or foam sclerotherapy rather than simple thread vein injections.
Comfortable flat shoes are usually the most sensible option. Trainers or easy slip-on shoes are often ideal, particularly if a compression stocking is used.
Think about compression stockings
In some cases, you may be asked to wear a compression stocking after treatment. This depends on the procedure performed and your individual circumstances.
If a stocking is used, it may be applied before you leave the clinic. Loose clothing makes this much easier and avoids pressure or discomfort over the stocking. It is also worth choosing shoes that will still fit comfortably if your leg has a stocking or dressing on it.
Do not apply creams, oils or fake tan
On the day of treatment, please do not apply moisturiser, fake tan, body oil or heavy creams to the leg being treated.
These products can make it harder to clean the skin properly and may affect how dressings, adhesive strips or tapes stick afterwards. Clean, dry skin is best.
Wear underwear that allows access to the upper thigh or groin
For many vein treatments, the area being treated may extend up towards the upper thigh or groin. You do not need to buy anything special, but it is helpful to wear underwear that allows the leg to be cleaned, scanned and treated comfortably while preserving your dignity.
The clinical team will use appropriate drapes and will explain what is happening throughout. Only the part of the leg that needs to be treated will be exposed.
Bring something warm
Treatment rooms are kept at a safe and comfortable temperature, but some patients feel a little cool during the procedure, especially if one leg is exposed for treatment.
Bringing a loose jumper, cardigan or coat for after the appointment can be helpful.
Can I drive afterwards?
For most varicose vein procedures, you should not plan to drive yourself home afterwards.
This applies to radiofrequency ablation, foam sclerotherapy and phlebectomies. Even if you feel well, your leg may be uncomfortable, dressed, bandaged or restricted by a compression stocking immediately after treatment. Local anaesthetic, tenderness and dressings can also make emergency braking or safe control of the car less predictable.
Please arrange for someone to collect you or plan to use a taxi.
Practical checklist
Before coming for varicose vein treatment, it is sensible to wear or bring:
- Loose trousers, jogging bottoms, shorts, a skirt or a dress
- Comfortable flat shoes
- No moisturiser, fake tan, oils or heavy creams on the treatment leg
- Underwear that allows access to the upper thigh or groin if needed
- A loose jumper, cardigan or coat for afterwards
- Someone to drive you home, or a plan to take a taxi, unless you are only having thread vein injections
Final advice
The best outfit for varicose vein treatment is simple, loose and comfortable. The aim is to make it easy for your leg to be examined, scanned, cleaned, treated, dressed and placed into a stocking if needed.
If you are unsure what to wear, choose loose clothing and comfortable flat shoes. That is almost always the safest option.
Please do not drive yourself home after varicose vein treatment unless you are attending only for thread vein injections and have been told it is safe to do so.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear for varicose vein treatment?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of. Loose trousers, jogging bottoms, shorts, a skirt or a dress are usually good choices.
Can I wear leggings after varicose vein treatment?
Tight leggings are best avoided. They can be difficult to pull on over dressings, padding or a compression stocking, and may feel uncomfortable after treatment.
Should I shave my legs before treatment?
You do not usually need to shave your legs specially before treatment unless you have been asked to. If hair removal is needed for dressings or access, this can usually be managed by the clinical team.
Can I use moisturiser before varicose vein treatment?
It is best not to use moisturiser, fake tan, oils or heavy creams on the leg being treated on the day of the procedure. Clean, dry skin is preferred.
Can I drive home after treatment?
Not after most varicose vein procedures. Please arrange for someone to collect you or use a taxi. The main exception is thread vein injections, where driving is usually possible if you feel well and have not been advised otherwise.
